Dr. Ausman has been Professor of Neurosurgery in four universities and Head of Neurosurgery at Henry Ford Hospital and at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is now Professor of Neurosurgery at UCLA Medical Center. He has authored over 300 publications in scientific journals, travelled to 70 countries to teach and to do neurosurgery. He has developed neurosurgical procedures, treatments, and surgical instruments that are used around the world. He has been an Editor of scientific journals for over 20 years, recently developing an Internet journal, Surgical Neurology International that has the largest circulation in its field and is read in 224 countries and territories.
In his surgical career, Dr. Ausman has had the opportunity to work with thousands of patients with neurological conditions. He has a reputation for treating patients with complicated neurosurgical problems, often referred by neurosurgeons around the world. People are now living 20-40 years longer than any generation in history, and Medicine has advanced further than any time in history. As his father, a pioneering Geriatrician, Dr. Ausman understands that as people age, they develop more complicated medial problems and need special care to achieve “Healthy Longevity”. They need experienced physicians, like Dr. Ausman, who understands their medical and psychological needs to provide them the safest and best treatment.
In addition to his work as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Ausman and his wife, Carolyn, launched a multiple- year study of the challenges people, ages 40-100, face. The Ausmans named this demographic, “The Leading Gen®” for generation, as maturing adults do not like the term, “Seniors”. Among other discoveries, Dr. Ausman found a significant evidence that humans are not born with a fixed number of brain cells, which progressively die off as a person ages, but with the proper physical and mental stimulation, people’s brains will continue producing new brain cells throughout the course of their lives. This cell growth is stimulated by physical and challenging metal activity. As a product of their research Dr. Ausman and his wife created and produced an award winning public television series seen all over the nation, called “The Leading Gen®”, that focused on the challenges of this generation and ways to improve their neurological health by remaining physically and mentally active, rather than a sedentary. By looking at neurological health in a holistic manner, Dr. Ausman’s work casts new light on approaches and methodologies that can be developed and applied to improve people’s lives, now and in the future.
In his capacity as a board member and researcher at Somanetics Corporation, a biomedical company he helped create, Dr. Ausman played an instrumental role in the development of INVOS cerebral oximeter, which has since become a clinical standard instrument. This device allows doctors to monitor the oxygen saturation in a specific region of a patient’s brain without resorting to invasive techniques. By providing rapid, accurate results, the device helps pinpoint issues and potential issues in time to take life-saving action.
